Skis, snowboards and cross-country sets

Self-service ski rental booking system

A skier at the self-service ski rack by the lift at Kläppen, where every pair of skis has its own code padlock

Rentalbuddy is a booking system for self-service ski rental and ski hire. Renters book skis, a snowboard, a cross-country set or snowshoes in their size, pay online and get their own PIN code for the padlock on your ski rack – before your shop opens, after it has closed, or on a floodlit evening at a club hill with nobody free to staff the rental. Every pair is booked on its own, so you never rent out more pairs of a size than you have.

From 299 SEK a month excl. VAT, with no commission. NMB Rent set up a self-service ski rack like this at Kläppen, and clubs and municipalities can lend skis for free the same way.

How it works

How self-service ski rental works

Rentalbuddy's ski rental booking software handles the booking, the payment and the padlock code, so ski hire runs with nobody at the rack.

  1. Renters pick their size and pay

Each size is its own product – "Alpine skis 150 cm", "Snowboard 140 cm" – so renters pick theirs when they book, by the hour for an afternoon or by the day for a ski week. A family books four sets in their sizes, with boots and helmets as extras, in one booking and pays once.

  2. Their own code opens the rack

The button in their confirmation email opens their unlock page, where the code appears 15 minutes before the start – it's never sent by email or text message. It opens the padlock on the slot they booked, or the door of your ski room.

  3. They bring the gear back and confirm

They put the pair back, push the padlock shut – it locks without a code – and confirm the return on their unlock page, with a photo if you ask for one. The code stops working on its own soon after the booking ends.

Three ways to lock skis

  • A padlock on every pair

A rack whose slots close with a code padlock, like the one NMB Rent set up at Kläppen, or a steel cable through the bindings. A renter's code opens only the pair they booked.

  • One locked ski room or cabinet

One Igloohome lock on the door, and every pair is still booked on its own. You buy one lock instead of one per pair; the trade-off is that a renter's code opens the whole room around their booking, so number every pair and ask for a photo at return.

  • Boots, poles and helmets

Extras with their own stock, in a locked cabinet that every renter gets their own code for. You build or buy the rack, room or cabinet yourself – Rentalbuddy doesn't supply racks or skis.

FAQ

Questions about self-service ski rental

Can I rent out skis, snowboards and other winter gear in different sizes?

Yes – add each size as its own product and lock each pair. Settle one thing first: how alpine bindings get set when nobody is there (bindings ).

Name each size – for example "Alpine skis 150 cm" or "Snowboard 140 cm" – so renters pick their size when they book and you never rent out more pairs than you have. Lock each pair with a code padlock in a rack, or keep them in one locked ski room, container or cabinet with one Igloohome lock on the door; boots, poles and helmets can be extras in a locked cabinet that every renter gets their own code for. Ask for height, weight or boot size when they book, put your safety rules in your terms and show a short video on using the gear before the code appears.

What does a booking system for ski rental cost?

Every pair counts as one lock on your plan, and so does each shared door. Starter covers one location with up to 6 locks for 299 SEK a month excl. VAT, with no commission. 6 pairs and a ski-boot cabinet are 7 locks – Growth, 599 SEK a month with 8 locks included. 20 pairs in one ski room are 21 locks: 599 + 13 × 120 = 2,159 SEK a month excl. VAT, with one physical lock to buy. Rent out kayaks or SUPs in summer? Switch them off in winter and the skis on: locks that are switched off don't count toward your plan, so both seasons fit in one plan.

On top come Igloohome's code fee of about 20 SEK per lock a month and Stripe's fee per payment, plus the locks, bought once – Igloohome's EU shop lists the Padlock 2 at €159.99 (October 2026). What could 20 ski sets in one ski room earn?

How do alpine bindings get set when nobody is there?

Decide that before you go unmanned. Alpine ski bindings have a release setting that has to match each renter's boots, weight, height, age and ability, and snowboard bindings need adjusting to the renter's boot size and stance. Staffed ski shops normally set and check release values with a binding tester, following the ISO 11088 standard – so ask your insurer what it requires before renters set their own. NMB Rent set up its Kläppen rack with SkiClicker, a tool for adjusting bindings quickly.

Or fit alpine sets at your counter and keep self-service for cross-country sets (skis with matching boots and poles), snowshoes, kick-sleds and sledges, where renters pick their own size and there's no release binding to set.

How should I price self-service ski rental?

A complete set often costs 200–600 SEK a day – cross-country at the low end and alpine at the top – on Nordic rental businesses' public price lists (October 2026). Price by the hour for an afternoon and by the day for a ski week, make longer rentals cheaper per day, and charge more for bookings that start in the winter holiday weeks.

Do the locks work in the cold?

The Igloohome Padlock 2 is rated for −20 °C to 50 °C and waterproof (IPX7), with up to about 9 months per charge – and a flat padlock can be powered for a moment from a power bank through its USB-C port. The Keybox 3's AAA batteries are rated only down to −10 °C, so use padlocks on an outdoor rack and keep any key box sheltered. Ask renters to brush off frost before they type the code. Often colder than −20 °C where you are? Talk to us before you buy locks.

What if there's a storm or no snow?

Close that day in the admin and move or refund its bookings from your phone – the codes follow the bookings. Put your weather rules in the terms renters accept when they book.

Can a club or municipality lend skis for free?

Yes. Switch online payment off, and borrowers book, accept your terms and get their own code without paying – for example for the winter holiday. Or let members borrow for free and charge everyone else. Lending for free
